What is the SmartTrips program? 

The smarttrips program provides a fun, interactive, way for people to explore transportation options including walking, biking, busing, rolling, and carpooling. 

The smarttrips program is a great opportunity to try a new transportation mode – one that saves you money and increases your activity levels! Whether you want to walk, bike, bus, or roll – smarttrips delivers FREE transportation information and prizes right to your door to make it easier. If you currently drive, smarttrips offers resources to explore using active transportation for one, or more, of your weekly trips. And if you already use active transportation, smarttrips offers additional support to get your where you need to go with ease. 

 

SmartTrips Gateway 2023

The City of Springfield ran a smarttrips program in the Gateway area in spring of 2023. Residents received a postcard in the mail inviting their household to participate in the smarttrips program, with the option to order a FREE kit of information and prizes. 

Active Travel Kit Order Options: 

All households participating in the smarttrips program received kits full of educational materials, prizes, event opportunities. Not only was everything FREE, but it saved them money!  

  • Walk There Kit: This kit includes a pedestrian light, reflective shoelaces, pedometer, information about walking in your neighborhood, invitations to walking events, and more. 
  • Bike There Kit: This kit includes bike lights, a reflective leg band, biking information including the new 2022 bike map, free bike maintenance opportunities, invitations to events such as guided bike rides, and more. 
  • LTD Bus Kit: This kit includes a pedestrian light, reflective shoelaces, free day bus passes, information about taking the LTD bus and EmX, invitations to bus there events, and more. 
  • Family Adventure Kit: This kit includes bike lights (set of 2), pedestrian lights (set of 2), reflective slap bracelets (set of 2), reflective stickers, a safe biking activity book, a comic book, family outing adventure invitations, and more. 
  • Spanish Language Kit: This kit includes a pedestrian light, bike lights, reflective shoelaces, free day bus passes, information about walking, biking, and busing in Spanish, invitations to events, and more.

Bike + Roll to School Day, May 3

  • Bike or roll to school today and enter to WIN a goodie bag! Just text a photo of your kid, or their bike/scooter, to the SmartTrips team (541-255-6337) and you'll be entered to win.

Party in the Park, May 4, 3 - 5:30 pm

  • Stop by Guy Lee Park for the SmartTrips kick-off event to grab all the FREE goodies you need for walking, biking, and busing! Free bike repairs and snacks too.

AAPI Heritage Celebration, May 12, 5 - 8 pm

  • Visit the SmartTrips table at the first-ever Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration at Guy Lee Elementary. A FREE family-friendly event that features cultural performances, activities, and food vendors.

Fix-it Fair Bike Repairs, May 12, 5 - 7:30 pm

  • Head Downtown to the Academy of Arts & Academics for the Friday Art Walk Fix-It Fair! FREE bike safety checks and minor repairs.

Springfield High School Bike Repairs, May 16, 3 - 5 pm

  • Head over to Springfield High School (along 7th Street) for free bike safety checks and minor repairs with Shift Community Cycles! Prizes, food, and fun. Focused on teen bikes, put open to the public. 

Springfield Library "Get to Know Your Bike", May 16, 4:30 - 6:30 pm

  • Head over to the Springfield Library to get to know your bike! Learn the basics of bike repair – including how to oil a chain, how to reset a loose chain, how to choose a seat height, how to air your tires, and more! Free biking swag too – lights, reflectives, and more. Open to teens (ages 12-18) from 4:30-5:30 and families/adults from 5:30-6:30 pm.

Wheels by the Willamette, May 18, 4:30 - 6:30 pm

  • Roll to the Riverbank Path (D St.) for FREE bike safety checks and minor repairs with Shift Community Cycles, resources, prizes, and snacks. Learn about City projects and meet City staff.

Bike to Work Day, May 19

  • Enter to WIN one of three $50 gift certificates to the GATEWAY GRILL by texting a photo of you on your bike in front of your destination to SmartTrips (541-255-6337).

Bike to Baseball, May 21, 12 pm

  • Join the SmartTrips team for a group bike ride, with FREE entry and concessions voucher, to the Emeralds Baseball Game. Meet at Guy Lee Park to bike together. Bring your bike helmet, bike lock, and clear or small bags only.

Mount June Hike, May 31, 9 am - 3 pm

  • Join Willamalane for a hike through a Douglas fir forest and rocky meadow to the top of Mount June. Pre-register by calling Willamalane at 541-736-4544. FREE when you mention SmartTrips.

Guy Lee Bike Rodeo, June 1, 5 - 8 pm

  • The SmartTrips team will be on-site at the Guy Lee Elementary Book Fair with a bike rodeo. Youth are invited to practice their biking skills in the skills course. Everyone is invited to stop by for FREE prizes, maps, and resources.

Erma Bell Lakes Hike, June 8, 9am - 3 pm

  • Explore Willamette National Forest’s natural beauty on a 4.2-mile hike to Erma Bell Lakes and waterfalls with Willamalane. Pre-register by calling Willamalane at 541-736-4544. FREE when you mention SmartTrips.

Bus to Camp Putt, June 9, 3:30 pm

  • Do you love mini-golf? Join the SmartTrips team for an afternoon at Camp Putt! We'll meet at the LTD Gateway Station and bus over to Camp Putt and back as a group. FREE mini-golf and pizza party for participants.

Proxy Falls & Linton Hike, June 13, 9 am - 3 pm

  • Enjoy two breathtaking hikes with Willamalane. Featuring a lava field, broad forested ridges, and two of the most beautiful waterfalls in Oregon. Pre-register by calling Willamalane at 541-736-4544. FREE when you mention SmartTrips.

Bohemian Mountain Hike, June 18, 9 am - 3 pm
